Gateway to the West

Kew Gardens, England

Limited Edition of 10 Museum Grade, Fine Art Prints.

Hokusai-Mon (Gateway of the Imperial Messenger) is a near replica of the Gate of Nishi Hongan-ji (Western Temple of the Original Vow) in Kyoto, Japan.

Created for the Japan-British Exhibition held at White City in London in 1910, The Japanese Gateway is built in the architectural style of the late-16th century Momoyama (or Japanese rococo) period.

The landscape was laid out in 1996 following restoration of the Japanese Gateway. In designing it, Professor Fukuhara of Osaka University adapted garden styles from the Momayama period when the original gateway in Japan was built.

I decided to name this image “Gateway to the West” based on the history and name of the original gateway. I loved photographing in Kew Gardens this time of year in the early spring when the trees and bushes were just waking up. I really loved being able to compose the image with the burning, red bush in the lower right third. The stormy clouds give the perfect mood to this photograph.

Vibrant Colors and Clarity!

The Finished print will look different than what you see on your phone or computer screen. Your phone or computer screen does not do justice to the amazing color and depth of these museum grade, fine art prints. When enlarged to sizes of 24x36 or larger these prints really explode in detail and vibrancy. Proper lighting on your prints can be key to how they will look in your home or office. Here is an article Tomas wrote about how to light your photographic art.
