River to Eternity

Susitna River, Alaska

Limited Edition of 25 Museum Grade, Fine Art Prints.

This photograph is part of Tom's film series of images taken between 1984 and 2006. Each image in this series is available in Limited Edition Fine Art printings of no more than 25 in the various Museum-Grade formats.

I took this image in the end of August 2005 or 2006. I was on a business trip to Alaska and as usual I took my camera. I finished by business Friday night and my flight did not leave Anchorage until Monday morning, this left two days of exploring. Sunday morning I hit the road before sunrise and headed north. My goal was Denali National Park. This was my first trip to Alaska and I had no idea what to expect. As I drove I watched for wildlife, scenic vistas, anything of interest. I came to a view point overlooking the Susitna River. I pulled in and got out. As I looked up the river I realized I was seeing Denali towering above the clouds. I set up my tripod, attached my Nikon F4 and was composing the photograph when the clouds moved in front of the mountain. I waited… and waited… the mountain never showed itself again. I found out later I could have waited for months and might never have seen the mountain from that perspective again. I loved the view anyway so I shot the scene before the sun got too high. When it came time to title this image I got thinking about that day and how the river just disappears in the distance like it goes on forever.
