This photograph is part of the series “Caballos Fantasmas del Rio” (Ghost horses of the River). I found it fitting for such abstract ghostly images.
This night I watched and watched for the horses and did not see any. I scanned up and down the river, the light was failing, the moon was rising and no horses. Finally I saw them up river from me in the dusk. I moved toward them and as I got closer the herd started crossing the river. The full moon, a Blue Moon, was up over the hills lighting the scene. I set up quickly and picked a lone mare as she crossed in front of me. I waited for her to enter the water and then tracking her with my camera took the image with a 1/4 second shutter speed. The trick is to keep panning as you take the shot, to follow through. I was ecstatic with with what I got!
