Wasatch Mountains, Utah

Limited Edition of 25 Museum Grade, Fine Art Prints.

This photograph is part of Tom's film series of images taken between 1984 and 2006. Each image in this series is available in Limited Edition Fine Art printings of no more than 25 in the various Museum-Grade formats.

I took this image around 2005. One of my favorite ways to photograph wildlife is to just sit in one spot all day and see what comes by. Many people would find this boring and tedious, I find it relaxing and a great way to really connect with nature. Sitting in one spot for a long period helps you see every little detail in your environment. The small insects and rodents moving about, the birds feeding, the wind blowing, the trees creaking. You learn to isolate every small detail while just sitting and being still. I was doing this on top of the Wasatch mountains above Bountiful, Utah one evening when I saw two young coyotes coming my way. I was in camo and sitting still in some rocks and they had no clue I was there. They split up and the one went behind me while the other came right in front of me. I focused on a spot and waited for it to reach it. The second it reached the predetermined point I moved a little to catch its attention then “clicked” the shutter. I was shooting a Nikon F4 at the time and the whir of the camera made the poor little dog about jump out of its skin!! In the next photograph on the roll of film the little guy is out in the sun where he landed after he jumped away from the noise! Photo © copyright by Tomas W. Mitchell.
