Timpooneke Footprints

Mount Timpanogos, Utah

Limited Edition of 25 Museum Grade, Fine Art Prints.

This photograph is part of Tom's film series of images taken between 1984 and 2006. Each image in this series is available in Limited Edition Fine Art printings of no more than 25 in the various Museum-Grade formats.

I think I took this photograph in April or May of 1991 or 1992. I had parked my truck at the Timpooneke Trailhead and being young and stupid decided to hike to the summit of Mount Timpanogos. I didn't have any specialized gear like an ice ax or crampons and truth be told I knew better but I was going through a very hard time in my life and just wanted an adventure and possibly some danger. So I hiked into the Timpanogos Basin which was still under six to eight feet of snow and crossed the basin. I followed other peoples tracks and climbed my way up to the saddle that looks down into Utah Valley. I was standing on a ledge looking at the cornice of snow that hung off the cliff side of the saddle and I could see where other foolish adventurers had climbed over the snow drift to climb onto the ridgeline saddle. The indentation others had made was about as high as my armpits and somehow I scrambled up and stood on the ridge. Looking back at what I had done I realized how stupid I was because I could have easily slipped and fallen 50 feet off the ledge. So I did what any 26 year old would do and I took this photograph of the amazing scene at my feet. My footprints, along with others, are somewhere down there in the snow. To help you understand the scale of this scene the trees in the upper left side of the frame are easily 50 to 75 feet tall. Then knowing I would fall if I tried to climb back down the route I had just come, I made my way down the front side of the mountain and hitched a ride with some nice guy who was four-wheeling the Timpooneke road back to my truck. I'm a firm believer that youth is wasted on the young. I love how this abstract photograph turned out. This is a classic example of spring in the high country with the melting snow and patterns it creates in the snow. I can't believe now in 2022 I'm finally releasing this image and it has been 30 years since I took this photograph.
