Fine Art Nature Landscape Photography

February 5, 2026

Nature and Landscape Photography is more than a craft or science, it is an art. When the images are printed on the highest quality archival substrates it becomes fine art to be enjoyed for many generations.

Nature and Landscape Photography started when men like Edward Steichen began experimenting with using the camera to record nature scenes. The art gained momentum when William Henry Jackson began photographing the western USA, including Yellowstone, helping to convince the government to make the area a National Park.

It was not until Ansel Adams became a household name that interest in Nature and Landscape Photography as art truly blossomed and collectors began to realize the value of the art. Edward Weston also contributed greatly to the art as well as his son Cole Weston, who carried on the legacy.

Nature and Landscape Photography as art is far more than pointing a camera at a scene. Ansel Adams said "You don't take a photograph, you make it". This sentiment is as true today as it has ever been. Capturing a truly artistic photograph takes timing and patience. Returning to the same place over and over again until that one perfect moment is found. Understanding of composition, knowledge of how to meter and expose the image, and skill to edit the image into what you saw are important pieces of the art. Light is the brush with which the photographer paints the photograph to create art. Ansel Adams edited his images while printing in the darkroom with techniques like dodging and burning that lighten or darken areas of the image. With modern photography editing the artist does the same thing by using computer programs like Photoshop and Lightroom.

Creating a photograph that can be sold as art in these modern times encompasses having a camera that can produce very large prints. Collectors and clients alike want large prints. All of Tomas W Mitchell's standard 3:2 or 2:3 ratio images can be printed as large as 60x40 inches and most can be printed to 72x48 inches. Many of Tomas' newest images can be printed to 90x60 inches in Lumachrome prints.

Most panoramic 2:1 or 1:2 and 3:1 or 1:3 ratio prints can be printed 40 to 48 inches high with some print as large as 60 inches high in lumachrome acrylic.

Large format prints are what many of Tomas' customers want. Large prints with sharp detail that can be viewed up close seeing the detail of every blade of grass or leaf. Many people make the mistake of purchasing prints that are too small and do not properly fill the space on the wall. Make sure to measure the space and purchase a print large enough to fill it.

Tomas prides himself in giving the option to fill large areas with an image that will make people gasp in delight.

You may have a favorite location based on where you grew up or traveled. Finding a photographic art piece that reminds you of a place or time and brings back the feelings from a memory is what attracts you to photographic art. Often times Tomas has photographed views that are no longer available. You see these perspectives and are drawn to it because you remember seeing this lost view years before and want the image in your home.

Finding Nature and Landscape Photography art prints for your home or office is about understanding what options are available and seeing images that draw you in and create an emotion that make you want it.

Tomas has numerous options in limited edition printings all in museum grade quality.

Tomas offers two types of acrylic mounted prints. The Gallery Ultra Lumachrome Acrylic Mounted Print and the Museum Acrylic Mounted Print.

Acrylic mounted prints are created by sandwiching the art print between two pieces of acrylic glass. These prints come with hanging hardware attached so the piece seems to float on the wall. Acrylic prints can also be framed in which case the hanging hardware is attached to the frame instead of the print.

Tomas also offers a Museum Aluminum Mounted print that differs from other types of aluminum prints. While others use sublimation to transfer their image to the aluminum substrate, Tomas has the print laminated with glossy or matte laminate and then mounted to a sheet of stiff aluminum. This process looks like an ultra thin acrylic and is far superior to sublimation prints. This print type can be hung with the included float frame hardware like the acrylic prints or it can be framed. Here is an article about aluminum mounted prints.
