This image is part of my series Autumn in Motion. I took these images while sitting in the passenger seat of the car as we drove over the Mirror Lake Highway, Utah on September 15, 2021. The fall colors were just really starting in the aspen trees and I loved the light and colors but we didn't have time to stop, so I decided to shoot from the moving car. The technique used in this style of abstract photography is called Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) and is done by moving the camera during the exposure. In this case I panned to the right and up with each exposure trying to match the speed of the car.
This photograph is a perfect example of layers. In the close foreground you can see the individual stalks of grass, then there is a layer of blur midground and then the trees in the back with obvious trunks and branches blurred as I swiveled the camera as we drove by. This image is so warm and cheerful to me with the afternoon light and the blue sky.
